How will May Dodge do at Harrisburg in 2025?

If you read this column with any sort of regularity, you know my favorite family of all pacers in harness racing is the one that traces maternally to a mare by the name of May Dodge. I’ve written about her and her descendants several times. I’ve preached her gospel to just about anybody who will listen.
Her descendants are numerous and exceptional.
I happened to be speaking about her and her influence on the breed with Myron Bell last week. Bell is the person I sometimes not all that facetiously refer to as “Mr. Harness Racing.” There are a small group of us old guys who spend a whole lot of time seriously perusing the pedigrees of almost every horse we become aware of. I include Bell, Bob Marks, Bruce Brinkerhoff, Bob Boni and perhaps two or three others among them. When speaking with Bell last week, he made a statement with which I whole heartedly agree. He said, “May Dodge is the single pacer, including all stallions and mares, who has influenced the pacing breed more than any other single horse.”

They constitute a veritable “Who’s Who” in the history of the breed.
In my first listing of her descendants selling at Harrisburg, they included two fillies by the name of Twin B Joe Fresh ($2,862,479) and Sylvia Hanover ($2,268,468) two of the greatest pacing mares in recent history. Last year, I took this remarkable matron’s produce one step further by including her colts as well as her filly descendants.
You might ask how did they do? The truth be known, the fillies did not perform up to their usual standards. The colts? They were another story. Among them were Hip #340, then called TH Bo Jangles, now known as Beau Jangles, the undefeated 2-year-old winner of $1,227,326 and the colt to these eyes, barring something extraordinary occurring, will receive my vote for 2025 Harness Horse of the Year. Another one was Hip #462 Frantic Hanover ($537,590), the Pennsylvania champion and runner-up to Beau Jangles in the Grade 1 Metro Pace.
