Both Nuncio and Delicious were chasing victories Saturday at Solvalla, but only one of them that extended their winning streak.

Nuncio, with 15 victories in a row before his race Saturday at Solvalla in Stockholm in the $57,000 (U.S.) Gr. II International Tritun Sunds V75 Gold, was the big favorite in the first elimination for Olympiatravet. Among the opponents, On Track Piraten seemed to be the toughest.

But being parked outside the leader El Mago Pellini was too hard for On Track Piraten and Nuncio couldn’t reach the winner Kadett C.D., who trailed the leader and had plenty of trot to post the upset. The approximate mile time over the distance 2 5/8ths was 1:55.

Kadett C.D., a ten-year-old son of Scarlet Knight out of the Tenor de Baune mare Kiss Of Fire, was a star in Sweden as a three- and four-year-old and once participated in Prix d’Amerique in Paris. As a four-year-old he won both the European Derby in Switzerland ($355,390) and Breeders Crown in Sweden ($223,750) and the horse’s bank account is some $895,000.

“Kadett C.D. has been really good for a long time and I don’t know if he has been this nice since he was five years old,” said Kadett C.D.’s trainer and driver Robert Bergh after the race. “My hope was that we could end up second or third if we would have got the right trip, but the longer the race moved on the better he was and this is special for me. Now we can put target on the final at Åby.”

The $167,000 (U.S.) Olympiatravet final will be held April 29 at Åby, Göteborg.

Nuncio finished second Saturday at Solvalla and will possibly get a wild card for Olympiatravet.

“Nuncio raced well even if he didn’t win today. I pushed him a bit from the start and that cost us, but I still think that the horse had a normal performance,” said Nuncio’s driver Örjan Kihlström.

Kihlström did his job behind the eight-year-old Cantab Hall mare Delicious in the Pixies race. Delicious was seen on the track for the second time this season and did not disappoint the spectators.

Delicious took the lead from stablemate Windy Ways after 500 meters (a half 5/8 mile) and easily sprinted to victory in the home stretch. Deliciouis’ trainer Daniel Redén will probably not give any safe answers about the horse’s future, especially after her last season, where she couldn’t start continuously because of problems with her stomach, but it’s not a wild guess to think that Redén is targeting the Elitlopp this year.

“With this horse I take one day at a time. She’s giving me so much joy every day and she’s the one who decides which path we’re heading towards. If she’s ready for the biggest races, she lets me know that. Right now I’m just so happy that she has come back to the racetrack,” Redén said.
