Caldwell cautiously optimistic about Cane Run’s all-trotter consignment

Elizabeth Caldwell, co-manager of Georgetown, KY-based Cane Run Farm said there is a lot to like about her consignment of 16 trotters.
“It’s a good group of horses,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of visitors out here at the farm lately. There’s a bunch of Gimpanzees, and he’s having a pretty good year, so hopefully that will translate in the sales ring. We’ll see how that goes.”
Eight of the 12 yearlings Cane Run is selling were sired by Gimpanzee, who currently ranks fourth in 2-year-old progeny earnings.
Cane Run is selling four yearlings of its own this year and 12 as an agent.
“There’s a lot of nice individuals and the pedigrees are active right now, which is super helpful,” Caldwell said. “Hopefully where we’ve gotten our horses placed will stand out on those days. We’ll see what happens.
“Every year is a little different. Walner is always popular and we have two very nice fillies and strong pedigrees [Hip #301 Walyria and Hip #328 Ascend].
“Then, there are two colts that are really nice. The Beautiful Sin colt [Hip #162 Jungle Law] and the Dibaba S colt [Hip #480 Abebe]. Those are both Gimpanzees and they are very athletic.
“Muscle Hill, he’s retiring, and we have two of those. [Hip #215 Ever Since, a filly, and Hip #271 Muscle Will, a colt]. So, it’s one of the last chances to get one of those, especially a filly.”
Asked to pick some favorites based on looks, Caldwell pointed out a handful.
“[Jungle Law], he stands out,” Caldwell said. “He’s a Gimpanzee. And Hip #328 [Ascend], she’s very nice, a Walner filly. The Muscle Hills are both really nice. Then, Hip #480 [Abebe], he’s a standout. Very handsome.
“I’m kind of partial to Hip #477 [Dua], that’s one of ours, and Hip #697 [Deanie] is a very nice individual as well.
“Somebody said, ‘You have a really good group overall.’ That’s nice to her and they are well-prepped. The guys have done a great job and I’m hoping that translates in the auction ring.
“I’m hoping it goes well. I hope the buyers will be here to shop and they will spend a little money. You never know.
“The thoroughbred sale was really strong, but it just depends if you have the right horse, the right individual. Everything has to add up at times and have two bidders.”
