Reaction to Hambletonian Society vs. Gural

I wrote my previous missive before the official rebuttals from Mr. Gural and Mr. Campbell. Now that both have responded to the poor-and-industry-hurting decision to move the Hambletonian, I felt the need to add. Writing has become my therapy for watching the game I love embarrass itself.

First, I applaud Mr. Gural for not throwing in the towel and vowing to fight on. Personally, I thought he’d just say, “I’m 84 and I’m done with this stuff.” He faces a brutal uphill battle now on every front. From the industry to casino opposition to politics, I’m not overly optimistic.

On the other hand, a few things don’t add up. Mr. Gural asserts that it was a personal decision in response to his exclusionary policies. Mr. Campbell rebuked that at first saying it had nothing to do with it, but then later declared it became part of the discussion when the bidding opened. Thus, you can’t have it both ways. On the flip side, I remember pretty well that Mr. Gural stated that the track would close if the casino ballot failed. I don’t remember the issue being “purse subsidies” linked to the new incoming New Jersey administration, although I understand how that would impact the situation since the stake purses would have to be funneled to protect the overnights. Neither Mr. Gural nor Mr. Campbell seemed to be consistent on those two issues. Just my interpretation.

I did find it ironic learning that Hoosier had been sold to an entity that has not mentioned any plans for the future. Mr. Campbell says they have a contract, but that seems just as iffy as The Meadowlands’ situation down the road. Just looking up Fertitta shows lots of big-name holdings in casinos, iGaming, and the Houston Rockets, but nary a single mention of horse racing. That seems like a big question mark.

Finally, I think it would be interesting and clarifying for the Hambletonian Society to at least release the final tally [on the vote] for moving the race. I’d be very interested in seeing how close the vote was. I get that an individual’s ballot is secret, but like in the past the total outcome can be released without issue. Also, my utmost respect to Gabe Prewitt and the folks in Indiana. Mr. Prewitt is one of the few proven race executives in the country and he has a track record of improving his product. Will the race be as successful handle-wise as The Meadowlands? No. It’s just not feasible due to the brand he represents, but I know he will put on a very good product for Hambletonian Day.
