Gaspar de Brion in great shape

by Thomas Hedlund

Matthieu Abrivard’s Gaspar de Brion (Singalo) conquered some well-merited trotters in the $105,000 Grand Prix Anjou-Maine in his start prior to Wednesday’s $190,000 Grand Prix du Sud-Ouest in Toulouse, France.

Abrivard gave his horse a ground saving trip on the inside, while the strong Jean-Michel Bazire duo of Elie de Beaufour and Hooker Berry surrounded him. Elie de Beaufour in front controlled the race and seemed to be home stretch free as the field turned for home, but Jean-Michel Bazire’s trotter left an open stretch as he winged out in the two wide path and pocket sitter Gaspar de Brion could sprint and bested the leader on the inside.

The mile rate over 1.6 miles was 1:59.2.

DERBY WINNER TO MILAN

The classic 3-year-old race the $310,000 Orsi Mangelli is traditionally held in Milan, Italy on Nov. 1 and it looks like Italy’s dominant trainer Alessandro Gocciadoro will have an interesting day at work.

There are never any guarantees that a trainer wins a race just because the number of his participants is big, but when the Orsi Mangellis is raced on Wednesday, Gocciadoro will have in total seven horses in two elimination heats.

Fresh Derby winner Expo Wise As (Ready Cash) will be the probable favorite to win the Orsi Mangelli over 1,600 meters and Gocciadoro has chosen to drive the horse himself. Five horses from each elimination will enter the final the same afternoon.
