Four big wins on Saturday for Timo Nurmos
by Thomas Hedlund
Swedish-based, Finnish-born trainer Timo Nurmos had a great Saturday at the tracks. In Sweden, he saw three of his horses win in the V75, where the new super trotter Seismic Wave (Explosive Matter) was one of his winners.
But the big trophy was caught in Finland in the $288,000 Kriterium for 3-year-olds in Tampere, where Sahara Jaeburn (Ready Cash) made a stunning first over performance that resulted in a new stakes record.
Jorma Kontio sat behind Nurmos’ trotter and placed Sahara Jaeburn outside of leader Magical Princess shortly after start. Positioned first over when the distance is 1.6 miles is a tough assignment for a pretty inexperienced 3-year-old horse, but Nurmos is well known for putting great strength in his trotters and Sahara Jaeburn showed morale and will over the home stretch.
The mile rate of 1:58.3 is a new stakes record and the duo Kontio/Nurmos collected their third win together in the race.
Ann-Dorra finished second ahead of leader Magical Princess.
Mellby Jinx in Breeders Course final
The $135,000 Breeders Course final for 2-year-olds was held at Jägersro racetrack on Wednesday night (Sept. 30) and Svante Båth-trained Mellby Jinx (Ready Cash—Heaven’s Door) was toughest from position first over.
Erik Adielsson played it safe outside of leader Good Vibes and let Mellby Jinx speed when the homestretch remained. That move was enough to grab the title and Mellby Jinx came home in 1:58.
Svante Båth’s gelding had made only two entries ahead of the race and the 2-year-old Ready Cash son collected $67,500 to his bank account, where $670 already was posted.
