Preferred Equine’s Lexington consignment strong on youth, eligibility, and trotters
by Dave Briggs
If there is one common denominator among the nearly 140 yearlings Preferred Equine is selling at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale for 27 different breeders, it is the youth of the mares and the large number that are dual, or even triple, eligible.
“The youth of the group here, it’s very, very young,” said Preferred owner David Reid. “We’ve got 29 first foals, 26 second foals. We have 39 either third or fourth foals for the mare. So, 94 of our lot are four foals or less and there’s a lot of young and exciting families that are producing or getting ready to produce that makes me excited.”
The Preferred consignment features 68 yearlings that are either dual or triple eligible to both Kentucky and Massachusetts, Reid said.
“The Massachusetts Sire Stakes is positioned at the end of the year and a lot of national trainers have recognized it,” Reid said. “It’s a nice feature to have [to be eligible to it].”
Reid said his consignment features horses from all the major jurisdictions, “and our sale graduates have won in all jurisdictions this year. They’ve won in Ontario, they’ve won in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky. So, representing that many breeders and so many different stallions, we have a diverse offering and we’re very proud of that as well.”
Last year, Preferred became the first Lexington consignor in history to exceed $12 million in sales. The number was exactly $12,588,000 from 165 yearlings sold.
A little heavier on trotters than pacers this year, Reid said Preferred will sell 24 Walner yearlings and another 16 by leading trotting sires Captain Corey, Chapter Seven or Muscle Hill.
“Then we have 13 by the underrated International Moni,” Reid said. “Then 10 by Tactical Landingand then we’re very excited to represent four from the first crop of King Of The North and four from the first crop of Cuatro De Julio.”
First crop sires selling this year in Lexington are from sires Alrajah One IT, Back Of The Neck, Cuatro De Julio, Ecurie D, King Of The North, Monte Miki, Pebble Beach, Rebuff and Temporal Hanover. The sale is also offering the second crop from Captain Corey, Bulldog Hanover and Ready For Moni.
“On the pacing side, we have a very good representation of the leading sires,” Reid said. “We have 15 yearlings by Captaintreacherous, Huntsville, Papi Rob Hanover, and Sweet Lou. And then we have 12 from the second crops of Bulldog Hanover, Perfect Sting, and Tall Dark Stranger.
“We think we’re definitely overloaded for bear, and we’re excited to show what we have and get the week started, for sure.”
Preferred began showing yearlings on Saturday morning at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion and will continue to be busy right through the sale.
