Elitloppet champ Go On Boy beaten at Vincennes

by Thomas Hedlund

Sunday’s (June 22) hot race card at Vincennes in Paris was something extra and when older trotters battled in the $210,000 Prix Rene Balliere over 2,100 meters, the chronometers showed figures never seen before over the actual distance.

Go On Boy made his first start since the triumph in Elitloppet in May and driver and trainer Romain Derieux had to settle outside of the leader Ibiki de Houelle. Settle might not be the correct word as the raced turned out. Ibiki de Houelle and Go On Boy kept the pace at a very high level and when they reached three-quarters-of-a-mile, the markers showed 1:20.4, with 900 meters left to go.

At the same point, midway into the race, Go On Boy stormed to the lead and Derieux seemed to have good control over the race as the field turned for home. But, obviously, Go On Boy started to be marked by the furious pace and the chasing Jabalpur (Booster Winner) was trying to capture the leading favorite via the inside of the track. Go On Boy entered the stretch near the rail, but drifted badly and was near the center of the track when he was disarmed by Jabalpur, who Gabriele Gelormini got fired up after a second over trip.

Jabalpur won in a mile rate of 1:50.3, a new world record over 2,100 meters. Go On Boy was second in 1:50.4 and Iguski Sautonne was third in 1:51.

FILLY MILLE ETOILES BESTS GIRLS AND BOYS IN GROUP 1 EVENT

The 3-year-olds gathered at Vincennes when the $210,000 Prix Albert Viel over 2,700 meters was scheduled on Sunday’s card (June 22) and in the end, a filly trained by Nicolas Bazire proved best.

Jean-Michel Bazire drove the filly Mille Etoiles (Prodigious), who was served a pretty heavy trip while favorites Magic Man and Maitre Jacques had more ground saving trips close to the pylons.

Despite that, Mille Etoiles proved strongest in the last turn and after her advantage was acquired, she just held the other M-girls and -boys behind her as she won in a mile rate of 1:57.1 over 1.6 miles.

FACE TIME SPADA IMPRESSES IN AUSTRIAN DERBY

The 140th edition of the $55,000 Austrian Derby for 4-year-olds was held in Vienna on Sunday (June 22) afternoon and Gerhard Mayr’s Face Time Spada (Face Time Bourbon) was too hard to go around as she won in a mile rate of 2:01.1 over 1.6 miles.

Face Time Spada claimed her 10th win in 11 starts and driver Mayr captured his third Derby victory.

E3 FINALS AHEAD

Sweden’s E3 series for 3-year-old horses runs pretty much over the whole year, but two of the four big finals are traditionally scheduled in summertime, where the first of them, the 2,140 meters edition, is on the race card in Eskilstuna this Saturday (June 28).

The $300,000 final for colts and geldings sees fresh world record champion Wise Guy behind the gate and he secured his spot in the final by winning his elimination in safe style on June 16.

Trainer Fredrik Wallin had a great night on June 16 as he qualified six of his 3-year-olds for the finals in Eskilstuna and he might be successful even on Saturday. In the $300,000 E3 final for fillies, Wallin has four cards in the deck of 12 horses.
