Cane Run has 13 yearlings to sell in Lexington; 11 of them trotters

Cane Run Farm enters the 2022 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale with a larger consignment than in years past. The Georgetown, KY-based nursery offers a roster consisting of 11 trotters and two pacers. The 13 yearlings are spread out over each of the five sessions, with a pair of trotters selling opening night.

“We have a few extra yearlings this year. We have a couple of new clients,” said farm owner Elizabeth Caldwell. “I’m pleased with them. It’s a good group overall. We have a variety of sires this year. With something on every night, it’s like we have something for everybody. I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes.”

Hip 41 Flashes Of Light will be the first yearling from Cane Run to enter the sale ring Monday (Oct. 3). The Father Patrick filly is the first foal from Muscle Massive mare Fate Smiled, a PASS leg winner with $158,119 on her card and a beaten time of 1:54.1. Hip 48 Pirate’s Loot is a Muscle Hill colt that is the second foal from Hidden Temple, sister to Temple Of Doom and Jimmy Shin.

“We have a nice Muscle Hill colt, second foal out of Hidden Temple, from the family of Temple Of Doom. He looks good and we’re pleased with him,” Caldwell said. “The other is a Father Patrick filly, first foal out of Fate Smiles. Father Patrick has been hot this year, so that’s been exciting.”

The Cane Run consignment consists of two Muscle Hill babies, a pair from Father Patrick and Cantab Hall, and yearlings sired by Always B Miki, Chapter Seven, Class Included, Love You, Southwind Frank, Trixton and Yankee Cruiser. Caldwell said it is hard to single out any one individual from the group.

“Obviously the two Muscle Hills are both nice. The one on the second day is out of a French mare. We also have a Love You, so hopefully that will generate some interest as well,” she said. “I really like both of our Cantabs. They’re both nice individuals. They both had really good videos and the families have been doing well.”

Hip 223 Sir Hiss, is a Muscle Hill colt out of Love You starter Goldavila F. Cantab Hall filly Hip 171 In Your Eyes is out of 100 per cent producer Bright Baby Blues, a stakes winner that has a pair of six-figure earners to her credit from three foals. Hip 654 You Found Out is a Cantab Hall colt out of Muscle Hill mare Fortunes Of Fables, also a 100 per cent producer, led by Fade Into You 2,Q1:56.4; 3,1:54.4; BT1:51.1 ($215,628). Love You colt Hip 541 Boyd’s Cove sells on the third day. His dam, Pole Dancer, has three winners from four previous living foals.

“You’re seeing more European pedigrees over here. It’s really interesting to mix it up and helps with the inbreeding,” she said.

Last year, Cane Run grossed $717,000 selling nine yearlings. Despite a weakened economy, Caldwell said she is optimistic for this year’s sale based on what she has observed in the preceding Thoroughbred sales.

“The economy is not as great as it has been in the past, but the horse sales have not reflected that so far. Usually, our sale follows the trends of Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton up at Saratoga,” she said. “Hopefully that will continue on and trickle down. Hopefully people will be ready to spend some money.”
