Bath wins again in career year; Souloy suspended 10 years in Norway

by Thomas Hedlund

Swedish trainer Svante Båth has had a phenomenal year in 2017. On Saturday afternoon, he had five horses in the $167,000 Svensk Uppfödningslöpning, the biggest race for 2-year-olds in Sweden and his Global Welcome (S.J.’s Caviar) was unstoppable for driver Erik Adielsson.

Global Welcome had to do the heavy work outside of leader and favorite Smokin Joe at Jägersro racetrack, but with a quarter to go, Adielsson had good control of the leader.

Global Welcome came home in 1:57.3, while Båth’s Attraversiamo (Kiss Francais) took the silver medal. Båth’s horses have been successful in the big races during this year.

His horses have earned approximately $2,785,800 so far in 2017, a personal best for the trainer.

S.J.’s Caviar had the winner of Svensk Uppfödningslöpning last year as well. Now 3-year-old Coin Perdu — also trained by Båth — won that edition. This year, Coin Perdu won the $215,000 E3 and was second in the $478,000 Kriteriet.

10 year suspension for Souloy

French trainer Fabrice Souloy has been suspended for doping since last year. In Oslo, Norway, several horses were found with too high levels of Cobalt in the blood and Souloy was sentenced to a 15-year suspension and a $60,000 fine by the Norwegian association. After an appeal by Souloy and his attorney, the Superior Court in Norway, concluded the sentence should be for 10 years, but the fine should remain at $60,000.

Souloy-trained horses were also found to have high Cobalt levels last summer while racing in Sweden. He was sentenced to a one-year of suspension and a $120,000 fine by the Swedish jury. The appeal in that case has not yet been heard in Superior Court.
