The son also shines in Milan

Ten years after Adrian Chip won the Orsi Mangelli, his son Vitruvio also won the Italian classic.

by Thomas Hedlund

In 2007, Adrian Chip and his trainer Robert Bergh won the Orsi Mangelli for the 3-year-olds in Milan and on Wednesday it was time for his son Vitruvio to repeat what his father did 10 years ago. Trainer Alessandro Gocciadoro won the Italian Derby earlier this fall with Valchiria Op and now he can look back at a year where he has won the two biggest races for the 3-year-olds in his home country.

The $358,000 Orsi Mangelli was lacking drama. The two elimination winners — Vanesia Ek and Vitruvio — opened quickly and it was Vitruvio that controled the field of eight horses.

Vanesia Ek tried to challenge in the home stretch, but the leader held on and won by a head in 1:55.3 (mile rate).

Vitruvio was set to win the Italian Derby, but made an unfortunate break in the home stretch. He got his revenge in Orsi Mangelli instead.

Last year’s winner Unicka (Love You) was superior in the U-crop in Italy but was kidnapped from her stable in March this year and she has not been found yet.

French speed in Milan

The 6-year-old French mare Uza Josselyn (Love You) showed a solid stretch run when she fought against the best older horses in $358,000 Gran Premio Delle Nazioni in Milan, Italy on Wednesday afternoon.

Gabriele Gelormini, an Italian driver with Paris, France as his home base, got the chance to drive Uza Josselyn and he disposed his horse’s power the best he could.

Heavy favourite Timone Ek started from post 12 but was in front after 500 meters, while Gelormini put Uza Josselyn as fourth on the inside. In the last turn, the duo found an opening when Buzz Mearas made a break on the outside and Uza Josselyn made an impressive home stretch run which was enough to catch the leader right before the finish line in 1:56.1 (mile rate).

Timone Ek (Mr Vic), who has been very successful in Italy this season, was second and Tony Gio (Varenne) third.

Swedish Breeders’ Crown

The Breeders’ Crown for 3-, and 4-year-olds is up next in Sweden. We saw some impressive performances at Solvalla last weekend.

Among the 4-year-olds, Lutfi Kolgjini trained Rajesh Face (Raja Mirchi) was the most impressive winner in the Breeders’ eliminations. Over the distance 1.3 miles, Rajesh Face won easily from outside the leader Deimos Racing in 1:55.2 (mile rate).

Derby winner Cyber Lane (Raja Mirchi) and Sprintermästar (among other big races) winner Diamanten won their eliminations, respectively.

The 4-year-old mares saw Ultra Bright (Zola Boko), Caddie Lisieux (Ready Cash) and Eva I.H. (Ready Cash) as winners.

In the eliminations for the 3-year-old colts and geldings Hazard Boko (S.J.’s Caviar), Lucifer Lane (Infinitif) and Selmer I.H. (Love You) took their part in the final at Eskilstuna on Nov. 12.

Vamp Kronos (Ready Cash), Dibaba (Ready Cash) and Oaks winner Candy la Marc (Scarlet Knight) was the best horses in the eliminations for 3-year-old mares.

The finals carry a purse of $192,000, but most of the horses will go into the race with chance to get double price money.

Bird Parker in Belgium

The final of Tour Europeen du Trotteur Francais was held in Mons, Belgium on Friday, Oct. 27 and Jos Verbeeck drove Philippe Allaire trained Bird Parker to victory.

Bird Parker (Ready Cash) has raced in the shadow behind the superior ”B-horse” Bold Eagle in his homeland France during the whole career. Still, the six-year-old has earned $1.6 million and he is one of the best and most interesting horses in Europe. The winter meeting in Paris is up soon and Bird Parker will most probably be participating in the biggest races to come.

This time, the son of Ready Cash was sent to the front halfway in the race and driver Jos Verbeeck showed his happiness just before the finish line.

Over the distance 1.4 miles, Bird Parker trotted in 1:56.3 (mile rate) and got $70,000 for the victory. Totem d’Azur and Billie de Montfort took the places behind the winner.

Dante Boko sets slow pace

In Malmö, at Jägersro racetrack in Sweden, Dante Boko was allowed to slow down the pace almost ridiculously when he reached the front position in $95,000 C.L.Müllers Memorial over 1.6 miles.

The son of Going Kronos (Viking Kronos) has had a season where he has mixed brilliant performances with more ordinary ones and among his tops, the victory over Propulsion in Årjäns Stora Sprinterlopp in July counts.

Dante Boko’s speed when the gate is leaving is one of his most important weapons and in front, he is hard to beat. At Jägersro last Saturday (Oct. 28) when the distance was longer than usual, driver Adrian Kolgjini was relieved when the Elitloppet participant showed himself from the best side.

“But I’m almost a bit frustrated over the fact that the opponents didn’t challenge us more during the race. It feels great that he’s back in this shape,” Adrian Kolgjini said, while his father Lutfi commented further on the horse.

“I’m sure that Dante Boko will develop a bit more this winter and next year he will surely be one of the best horses in the elite,” Lutfi said.

The time for Dante Boko in this race was not too impressive, but since the first 5/8 of a mile was as slow as 2:03 (mile rate) the winning time could not be great. A mile rate of 1:59 over the distance is more like trying for these kind of horses in this class, but Dante Boko doesn’t have to apologize for the victory.

Västerboonthenews finished second and Zenit Brick third.

In Finland, Suur-Hollola winner Venice (Quite Easy) won St Seger for driver Mika Forss and earned 52.000 dollars. Venice has been one of the best mares in Finland for many years and she can look back at her best season ever 2017. Almost $245,000 has been collected this year.
